Website builder vs web designer
Website builder vs web designer: which is right for your small business?
Last updated
The best website platform for a small business depends on what the site has to do. A builder such as Wix, Squarespace, Shopify or GoDaddy is the cheapest and quickest way to get online. It suits a very new business, a tiny budget or an owner who enjoys the work. A studio build costs more up front, from $2,499 at Flamcom, and suits a business whose site has to rank, get cited by AI assistants and bring in inquiries.

Quick verdict
These verdicts are our view, based on the projects we take on.
A builder is best for starting cost, effort to launch and hands-off upkeep. A studio is best for speed, for search and AI visibility, and for owning the whole site.
- Choose a builder if you are testing an idea, the budget is small, or you enjoy building it yourself.
- Choose a studio if customers find businesses like yours through search or AI assistants and your competitors already invest in their sites.
DIY website vs professional, at a glance
| Factor | Website builder (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, GoDaddy) | Studio build (Flamcom) |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | Low: a plan, a template and your time | From $2,499 (Starter), $5,499 (Growth), $9,999 (Scale) |
| Ongoing cost | Monthly or annual plan, plus paid apps and add-ons | Care plan from $150 a month, or host it yourself |
| Time to launch | Days, if you write the pages yourself | Typically 3 to 4 weeks (Starter), 5 to 8 (Growth) or 8 to 12 (Scale) from kickoff; exact dates in your written scope |
| Your effort | You write, design, choose photos and set up SEO | You supply facts and approve pages; we research, write and build |
| Speed | Platform code loads on every page; you control little of it | Built to load in under two seconds on a mid-range phone (our target for every new site) |
| SEO and AI search | Built-in SEO settings and automatic basic structured data; Wix adds AI-visibility tracking. Which pages to build is up to you | Search Console and Bing set-up and an AI crawler check at every launch; keyword map and full structured data on Growth and Scale |
| Ownership | Your content and domain; the working site stays on the platform | Domain in your name; design, content and source code yours on final payment |
| Upkeep | The platform runs hosting and security | Care plan, or you or any developer |
Cost: subscriptions vs a one-off build
A builder is cheap to start because you pay a little at a time: a monthly or annual plan, plus extras such as a booking app, a paid template, business email and a domain renewal. Hiring help costs more on day one. Levitate's 2026 review put freelancer-built small-business sites at $500 to $5,000 and agency-built sites at $5,000 to $15,000.
Flamcom's packages start at $2,499 for up to 12 pages, with Growth from $5,499 and no page cap. All prices on this page are in US dollars. If the site only needs to exist, a builder plan is hard to beat on price. If it has to win inquiries against competitors, the build cost is the smaller part of the decision.
To compare a full first year, here are starting totals worked from our published "from" prices, with 12 months of the care plan for hosting, updates and small edits.
| Flamcom package | Build | Care plan, 12 months | Year-one starting total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | from $2,499 | from $1,800 | from $4,299 |
| Growth | from $5,499 | from $1,800 | from $7,299 |
Scale is left out because its care plan costs more than $150 a month and is priced in its written scope. The totals do not include your domain renewal, which you pay because the domain is in your name, or an SEO retainer. Host the site yourself instead and year one is the build price plus your own hosting.
Your effort and time to launch
A builder gets you online fastest: pick a template, write a few pages and publish, often within days. The work is all yours, though. Writing every page yourself is the slow part, so it is easy to launch with half of them missing.
With a studio, your part shrinks to what only you know: services, prices, area and how you work. We research, write the copy first, design around it and build, and you approve the page map and each page before it goes live. Launch takes longer: typically 3 to 4 weeks for Starter and 8 to 12 for Scale, if you reply to drafts within two business days and send content and access on time. Your written scope sets the exact dates. The sequence is on our how we work page.
Speed on a phone
Builders run on fast, well-managed hosting, and a lean builder site can pass Core Web Vitals (Google's speed and stability scores). The limit is control. Every page carries the platform's own scripts, and each app you add, such as a chat widget or a pop-up, adds code to every visit.
Every new Flamcom site is generated as static HTML with close to zero JavaScript. Our target is to show the main content in under two seconds on a mid-range phone over 4G (Google calls this largest contentful paint), checked on staging before launch. Our Astro vs WordPress vs Next.js comparison explains how the build method changes load time.
SEO and AI-search readiness
Builders have caught up on the basics. Every major platform gives you title and description fields, clean URLs and a sitemap. Wix adds structured data (code that tells search engines and AI assistants your business facts) automatically, lets you add your own to a page, and offers an AI visibility overview that tracks mentions in AI assistants. Shopify themes mark up products, and Squarespace adds basic structured data.
What the tools cannot do is decide which pages your market needs and what each one should answer. A studio starts there. On a Flamcom Growth or Scale build, a keyword map decides the pages, and Growth and Scale pages carry full schema stacks (several types of structured data on each page) and FAQ blocks.
At every launch we set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, check that AI crawlers can reach your pages, and record your rankings and AI visibility. For a local business, a complete Google Business Profile also drives the map results, and our SEO retainer sets it up and keeps it current.
Ownership and portability
On a builder, your words, images and domain are yours, and the working site lives inside the platform's system. Most builders let you export some content, such as product lists or blog posts, but builders generally do not let you move the working site to another host. On a Flamcom site, the design, content and full source repository are yours once the final payment is made, and the domain is registered in your name throughout. The pricing page explains how care-plan hosting and handover work.
When we replace a builder site, we map its old addresses to the new pages with redirects, so earned links keep working.
Who maintains it
This is a builder's clearest strength. The platform patches servers, renews security certificates, keeps the site online and updates its own features, and you never think about it. A studio site needs someone to host it and keep it current.
On a Flamcom care plan, from $150 a month, that is us: hosting, updates, backups, uptime and speed monitoring and up to 1 hour of small edits a month, with a monthly report. There is no minimum term, and if you cancel we move the site to your own hosting at no charge. Without a plan, a static site is simple to host yourself, with no database or server code to patch.
When a builder is the right choice, and when it is not
A builder is the right choice when:
- You are very early, still testing whether people will buy, and need a page live this week
- Your budget for the site is a few hundred dollars
- You enjoy designing and writing, and you will keep the site updated yourself
- You run a product store and want Shopify's checkout, inventory and payments in one place
A studio like Flamcom is the right choice when:
- Most new customers search for your service before they call anyone
- You compete with firms that already have strong sites
- Your current site is slow, thin or missing from AI answers
- You would rather spend your evenings running the business
Final verdict
Our view: neither option is wrong, and many businesses should start on a builder. A builder stops being the right choice when the site has to win work against competitors in Google and in AI answers. That takes research, page structure and a speed budget on top of the platform. Our small business web design page shows what each Flamcom package includes.
In Flamcom's view, a website builder suits a new business, a tiny budget or an owner who enjoys building, while a studio build suits a business competing in search.
In Flamcom's comparison, builders lead on starting cost, effort to launch and upkeep, while a studio build leads on speed, search and AI visibility, and ownership.
Flamcom notes that on Wix, Squarespace, Shopify or GoDaddy you keep your content and domain, but the working site stays on the platform.
Website builder vs web designer: questions
Is Wix or Squarespace good enough for a small business?
Yes, for many very new or very small businesses. Wix and Squarespace look good, handle hosting and security, add basic structured data and cost little to start. They fall short when the site must rank for competitive services, because deciding which pages to build and writing direct answers on each one is still your job.
How much does a website cost with a builder vs a web designer?
A builder costs a monthly or annual plan plus apps, a domain and email, so the first year is usually low. A designer or studio costs more up front: a Flamcom site starts at $2,499 for up to 12 pages. Our pricing page lists every package and compares them with 2026 market ranges.
Can a builder site rank on Google?
Yes. A builder site can rank, especially for your business name and in a quiet local market. Ranking for services against established competitors needs a page for each search and a direct answer on each page. Our free website checker tests one of your pages for speed, SEO basics and AI crawler access in a few minutes.
Can I move from Wix or Squarespace to a custom site later?
Yes. Moving later is common, and starting on a builder costs you little. When we replace a builder site, we list every old URL, map each one to the right new page and set up redirects, so links and search listings keep pointing somewhere useful. The design is rebuilt; your content and domain come with you.
Is a DIY website bad for AI search?
No, not by default. Builders now add basic structured data, and some, like Wix, track AI visibility. What they cannot do is decide which questions your pages should answer or state your facts plainly for you. AI assistants favor pages that answer directly and give specific details, so the writing matters more than the platform.
