Pricing, honestly
How much does a website cost in 2026? Real prices for a small business
A small business website costs about $200 to $590 in year one on a DIY builder (Wix, October 2026), $500 to $5,000 with a freelancer and $5,000 to $15,000 with an agency (Levitate, 2026). At Flamcom, a website plus our care plan costs from $4,299 in year one.
Every price here is in US dollars, and ours are starting prices that a written scope turns into a fixed price.

Key takeaways
- Wix's Light, Core and Business plans cost $17, $29 and $39 a month billed yearly, and Squarespace runs $19 to $99 a month on annual billing (both checked October 2026).
- Levitate's 2026 review puts freelancer-built small business sites at $500 to $5,000 and agency-built sites at $5,000 to $15,000.
- The build is one line on the bill. Domain renewal, hosting, apps and ongoing SEO come back every year.
- Our view: a builder is the right first site for a business still testing demand on a budget of a few hundred dollars.
What does each way of getting a website cost?

The price of a website depends first on who builds it: you on a builder, a freelancer, a small studio or an agency. Each route has its own upfront price and monthly bill.
A website builder is a hosted service where you pick a template and edit pages in your browser for a monthly fee. Builder prices below are from Wix's pricing guide (updated September 30, 2026), Squarespace and Shopify, billed yearly. Hired-route ranges are from Levitate's February 2026 review.
| Route | Upfront cost | Monthly or yearly cost | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify) | $0 to $300 | Wix $17 to $159 a month, Squarespace $19 to $99, Shopify Basic $29, all billed yearly | A template, with hosting and security run by the platform; you write and design every page | A new business testing demand on a small budget |
| Freelancer | $500 to $5,000 typical; $5,000 to $10,000 for top-tier freelancers | Maintenance $50 to $150 a month | One person's design and build; writing, scope and support vary by person | A simple site with a clear brief and a trusted referral |
| Small studio (Flamcom as the example) | From $2,499 (Starter), $5,499 (Growth) or $9,999 (Scale) | Care plan from $150 a month | Research, copy, design, build, tracking and launch set-up, with a written scope and fixed price | A business that needs its site to rank and bring in inquiries |
| Agency | $5,000 to $15,000 typical; $15,000 to $60,000+ for feature-rich or e-commerce sites | Agency maintenance retainers $100 to $1,000 a month | A larger team, often with branding, ads and custom development | Bigger budgets, complex stores and custom features |
Each route has a real strength. A good freelancer gives you direct contact with the person doing the work, though the project waits whenever that one person is busy or ill. An agency brings more people and services under one contract. A small studio such as ours puts a team on the work, and our Starter price sits inside Levitate's freelancer range.
What do Flamcom's website packages cost and include?
Flamcom's three website packages are starting prices, and your written scope sets the final fixed price before work starts.
- Starter, from $2,499: up to 12 pages and 30 days of support.
- Growth, from $5,499: no page cap, with FAQ blocks on every page. A keyword map, a list of the searches your customers make matched to the page that answers each one, sets the page count inside the price.
- Scale, from $9,999: everything in Growth, plus the first 12 articles written and 90 days of SEO work after launch.
Inclusions, payment terms and what each package leaves out are set out in how much a website costs for a small business at Flamcom. Our view: a buyer should know the starting price before getting in touch, which is why we publish ours.
What does a website cost in the first year?
Year one on a DIY builder runs about $200 to $590 for a simple site; a hired build adds a one-off price in the thousands. First-year cost is the build price plus every fee you pay in the first 12 months: plan or hosting, domain, apps and upkeep.
| Route | Build | 12 months of plan or care | Domain in year one | Apps and extras | Year-one total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wix Light (DIY) | $0 | $204 ($17 a month, billed yearly) | Free voucher on yearly plans | $0 to $240 for one paid app ($3 to $20+ a month) | About $204 to $444 |
| Wix Core (DIY) | $0 | $348 ($29 a month, billed yearly) | Free voucher on yearly plans | $0 to $240 for one paid app | About $348 to $588 |
| Shopify Basic (DIY store) | $0 | $348 ($29 a month, billed yearly) | Bought separately | 2.9% + 30¢ per online card sale through Shopify Payments, plus any apps | From $348 plus card fees |
| Flamcom Starter + care plan | From $2,499 | From $1,800 | Paid by you, in your name | Integrations quoted in writing | From $4,299 (starting total) |
| Flamcom Growth + care plan | From $5,499 | From $1,800 | Paid by you, in your name | Integrations quoted in writing | From $7,299 (starting total) |
The DIY rows leave out your own hours spent writing, designing and fixing pages. Our starting totals leave out your domain renewal and any SEO retainer. Scale has no total here, because its care plan is priced in its written scope.
In year two, a Wix .com domain renews at $13.35 a year and the builder plan keeps billing. On a Flamcom site, year two is the care plan alone, from $1,800 plus your domain renewal, unless you add SEO.
What makes a website cost more?
Six things move website design cost the most: page count, content writing, integrations, e-commerce, custom features and the SEO foundation.
- Pages. Each page needs writing, design and testing. On Growth and Scale the keyword map sets the count inside the package price.
- Content writing. Writing is the slowest part of any site. On a builder it is your job; on our packages we write the copy.
- Integrations. Linking the site to a CRM, booking tool or accounting system adds build and testing time, so we quote each one in writing first.
- E-commerce. Products, checkout, tax and shipping rules add the most work per page, which is why Levitate's e-commerce agency range climbs to $60,000 or more.
- Custom features. Calculators, client portals and dashboards are software, priced by what they have to do. Ours sit under custom development. Built an app yourself first? Read is vibe coding bad?
- SEO foundation. Titles, internal links, structured data (code that tells search engines and AI assistants your business facts) and a page plan built around real searches. Starter gets the basics; Growth and Scale get the full foundation.
Our view: content is the cost owners most often leave out of the budget. A cheap quote where you supply all the text has moved the slowest part of the job onto you.
How much does a website cost per month after launch?
After launch, a small business website costs $17 to $159 a month on a Wix plan, $50 to $150 a month for freelancer upkeep, or $100 to $1,000 for agency maintenance retainers (Levitate, 2026).
- Domain. A domain is your web address, rented by the year. Wix lists .com renewal at $13.35 a year once the free first year ends.
- Hosting. Hosting is the server space that keeps your site online. A builder plan includes it; a hired build needs a care plan or your own hosting.
- Maintenance. Updates, backups, security fixes and uptime checks. WordPress sites need regular core and plugin updates, while builders handle this for you.
- Plugins and apps. Wix's guide puts paid apps at $3 to $20 or more a month each, and every one adds to the yearly bill.
- SEO. Ranking work after launch is its own monthly cost. Ours is an SEO retainer from $1,499 a month, and our guide to what SEO costs sets out market ranges.
At Flamcom, website maintenance cost is the care plan, from $150 a month (what it covers).
When is a DIY website builder the right answer?
A DIY builder is the right answer when your budget is a few hundred dollars, you are still testing whether people will buy, and you have the time to write the pages yourself.
Builders do some things better than any hired route. The platform patches servers, renews security certificates and keeps the site online, so upkeep is off your list. You can go live within days. Shopify gives a product store its checkout, inventory and payments in one place, which is hard to match at $29 a month.
A builder stops fitting when the site has to win work against competitors in Google and in AI answers. Our view: start on a builder if the business is new, and rebuild once search becomes a main source of customers. When you move, the domain and your written content come with you, so the rebuild starts from what you already have.
How do you compare website quotes?
Compare website quotes by asking every provider the same questions, in writing, before you sign anything.
Who owns the site, its design, its content and its code, and when does ownership pass to you?
Whose name is the domain registered in?
What does the starting price cover, and what is the fixed price for your scope?
Is there a page cap, and what does each extra page cost?
Who writes the content, and how many rounds of changes are included?
What is left out, such as hosting, domain, apps, plugins, SEO and integrations?
What does the site cost each month after launch, and is there a minimum term?
What is the timeline in writing, and which feedback dates does it depend on?
Our answers for the record. Growth and Scale have no page cap, anything outside the package is quoted before it starts, and every written scope carries a timeline and a fixed price. Ownership is in the FAQ below.
Our view: a quote that cannot answer at least six of these eight questions is not ready to sign. The steps we follow on a website project show where each answer gets fixed in writing.
Flamcom's first-year starting totals are from $4,299 for Starter plus 12 months of the care plan and from $7,299 for Growth plus the care plan.
In Flamcom's view, website quotes are comparable only when each names the page cap, the domain owner, what is excluded and a written timeline.
Flamcom advises starting on a website builder when a business is new and testing demand, then rebuilding once search becomes a main source of customers.
Website cost questions
How much should a small business pay for a website?
Levitate's 2026 review puts typical hired sites at $500 to $15,000, with freelancers at $500 to $5,000 and agencies at $5,000 to $15,000. A DIY builder costs a few hundred dollars a year instead. Flamcom's packages start at $2,499 for up to 12 pages, and our pricing page lists what each package includes and leaves out.
How much does a website cost per month?
A website costs $17 to $159 a month on Wix and $19 to $99 on Squarespace, billed yearly, as of October 2026. A hired build adds upkeep, which Levitate puts at $50 to $150 a month for freelancers and $100 to $1,000 for agency maintenance retainers. Flamcom's care plan starts at $150 a month for hosting, updates, backups, monitoring and small edits.
Why do website design quotes vary so much?
Quotes vary because they cover different work. One may include research, copywriting, structured data and launch set-up, while another covers a template filled with your own text. Page caps, who writes the content and the monthly cost after launch change the real price most.
Is a $500 website worth it?
It can be, for a new business that needs a simple site fast. At that price, expect a template, a few pages and little research or writing, which suits testing an idea. Once customers find you through search or AI assistants, missing pages and answers matter more. Our free website checker tests one page for speed, SEO basics and AI crawler access within a few minutes.
Do I own my website if someone else builds it?
You should, so check the contract before you sign. Ask who holds the domain, the design files and the code, and when each passes to you. On a builder, your content and domain are yours while the working site stays on the platform. With Flamcom, you own the site, its content and its source code on final payment, and the domain is registered in your name.
How long does it take to build a small business website?
A builder site can go live in days if you write the pages yourself, and a studio build takes weeks. Flamcom's Starter typically takes 3 to 4 weeks from kickoff, Growth 5 to 8 weeks and Scale 8 to 12 weeks. Those ranges assume feedback within two business days and content on time, and your written scope sets the exact dates.
