How much does SEO cost? Small business prices for 2026, with ours published
Small businesses typically pay $1,500 to $3,000 a month for an SEO retainer, according to GoodFirms' SEO pricing review updated in September 2026, and Ahrefs' 2023 survey of 439 SEO providers worldwide put the average at $2,917 a month. Flamcom's SEO retainer starts at $1,499 a month, with the monthly scope and terms in writing before you sign.
All prices are in US dollars.

Key takeaways
- A small-business SEO retainer typically costs $1,500 to $3,000 a month (GoodFirms, 2026). In Ahrefs' 2023 survey, $501 to $1,000 was the most common monthly rate and $2,917 the average.
- Flamcom's retainer starts just under the GoodFirms range, and the monthly tasks, price and term reach you in writing before you sign.
- The price rises with competition, locations, site repair needs and how many new pages each month adds.
- SEO in 2026 covers AI answers too, so ask any provider whether they report each AI engine apart from Google rankings.
- Walk away from guaranteed rankings, bought links, quotes with no written scope and year-long lock-ins.
How much does SEO cost per month for a small business?
GoodFirms' review, updated September 29, 2026, says small businesses typically pay $1,500 to $3,000 a month for legitimate SEO work. Freelancers often charge less.
Ahrefs polled providers worldwide in 2023; in the US and Canada, 79.1% charged at least $1,001 a month.
Our retainer starts just under the GoodFirms band, and your written scope sets the final monthly price. Our view: a buyer should know the floor price before giving up an hour to a sales call, which is why ours is published.
What are the main SEO pricing models, and what does each cost?

SEO is sold four ways: monthly retainers, one-off projects or audits, hourly consulting and local-only packages. A retainer is a fixed monthly fee for agreed ongoing work, and it is how most small businesses buy SEO.
| Pricing model | Typical range | What you usually get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $1,500 to $3,000 a month for small businesses (GoodFirms, 2026); $2,917 a month on average worldwide (Ahrefs, 2023) | Ongoing fixes, new pages, listings and a monthly report | Businesses that want steady growth in search over many months |
| One-off project or audit | $2,501 to $5,000 is the most common project fee (Ahrefs, 2023); audits alone run $500 to $30,000 (GoodFirms, 2026) | A written list of problems and fixes, sometimes with the fixes done | A launch, a redesign or a second opinion before hiring |
| Hourly consulting | $75 to $100 an hour is the most common rate (Ahrefs, 2023); about $111 an hour on average (GoodFirms, 2026) | Advice, training or a review of work you do yourself | Owners or staff who will do the work in-house |
| Local-only SEO | About $1,557 a month on average for providers serving local markets (Ahrefs, 2023) | Google Business Profile, directory listings, reviews and area pages | Businesses that serve one city or region |
| Flamcom retainer, for comparison | From $1,499 a month, scoped after a free assessment | Technical fixes, new pages, listings, on-page AI-answer work and one monthly report | Small businesses that want the scope in writing first |
Our view: an audit is worth buying only when someone will act on it, because an unread fix list costs as much as one that gets done.
What does Flamcom's SEO retainer include each month?
Each month of Flamcom's retainer combines search work, AI-answer work and one report:
- Technical fixes: crawl errors, redirects, speed and schema (structured data that states your business facts for search engines), each logged with the page and the date.
- New and refreshed pages: pages your market searches for, picked from a keyword map, plus internal links. You approve every page before it goes live.
- On-page AEO and GEO work: writing and structuring pages so AI assistants can quote them accurately.
- Listings: Google Business Profile and Bing Places set up and kept accurate.
- Basic conversion fixes: the starter end of CRO (conversion rate optimization), such as clearer calls to action and shorter forms.
- One monthly report: Google rankings beside six AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode), measured against a baseline taken in month one.
The term is a 3-month minimum, then month to month, and you cancel with 30 days' written notice.
Our small business SEO service page walks through a month of work, and our pricing page shows the retainer beside our other packages. A full CRO project adds session recordings and testing.
What makes SEO cost more or less?
Five things move an SEO price, and the free assessment shows which apply to you.
- Competition: the more crowded the first page in your market, the more pages, links and months it takes to break in.
- Site health: slow pages, broken redirects or unreadable pages must be fixed before new content pays off.
- Content volume: new pages take the largest share of monthly hours, so two a month cost less than eight.
- Local or national: local SEO means ranking for searches in a specific city or service area, mostly through your Google Business Profile and area pages, and it usually costs less than a national push.
- Links and listings: a listing is your business's entry on a directory, and keeping each one identical while earning mentions elsewhere takes months.
Does SEO now include AI search like ChatGPT?
Yes. Good SEO in 2026 covers Google results and the answers AI assistants write, and most of the work overlaps. Google's generative AI guide (updated July 2026) says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, because those features are rooted in its core ranking systems.
On-page AEO and GEO work sits inside our retainer, with each AI engine on its own report line; see SEO vs AEO vs GEO and how to rank in ChatGPT. Off-site work as its own project goes through our AEO and GEO service, quoted separately.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Expect months, and treat any fixed date as an estimate. Google publishes no standard timeframe; its hiring guide suggests asking each provider what results to expect, and by when.
Flamcom writes these down as typical, with no guarantee. A new or rebuilt site is often indexed within days. Long-tail searches (longer, narrower phrases such as a service plus a neighborhood) tend to move within two to three months. Main service terms take six to twelve months, and newer domains and busier markets land nearer the twelve-month end.
Our three-month minimum gives you three reports and a baseline, enough to judge whether the work is moving anything.
Can you do SEO yourself?
Yes, many small businesses can handle the basics themselves, and the cost is mostly time. Google Search Console is free and shows which searches find you. A complete Google Business Profile, the free listing behind map results, does much of the local work on its own.
A sensible do-it-yourself list: complete your Google Business Profile and Bing Places, ask every customer for a review, write one clear page per service with prices or ranges, and fix the titles on your main pages.
Where DIY usually stalls is the technical layer, steady content and tracking AI answers engine by engine. Our view: start yourself, and hire help when the work outgrows your evenings. Our free website checker tests one page for speed, titles, schema, indexing and AI crawler access.
What should you ask an SEO company before you sign?
Get the answers to these seven questions in writing. Questions 2 and 3 come from Google's own list, and rows 3 and 4 follow Google's guidance.
| Question | A good answer | Walk away if |
|---|---|---|
| 1. What exactly will you do each month? | A list of pages, fixes and listings, with a monthly price | They describe optimization without naming tasks or keep their methods secret |
| 2. How do you measure success? | Rankings, traffic and inquiries against a baseline taken before work starts | The only measure is a ranking position they picked |
| 3. What results do you expect, and by when? | Ranges with reasons, tied to your competition | They promise page one or a #1 spot; Google's hiring guide says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google |
| 4. How do you earn links? | Directory listings, useful pages and real mentions | They buy links or use a private network of sites; Google's spam policies (updated August 2026) treat buying links for ranking as link spam |
| 5. Do you report AI answers separately? | Each AI engine on its own line | They give one blended AI score |
| 6. What is the minimum term and notice? | A short minimum, then month to month | A 12-month lock-in with no exit |
| 7. Who owns the work if I leave? | You keep the pages, listings and accounts | Listings or accounts stay in their name |
Our view: a short minimum is fair, since the first months go on setup, and after that you should be free to leave.
Flamcom scopes every SEO retainer after a free assessment, so the monthly task list, price and term arrive in writing before any work starts.
Flamcom's written typical SEO timing is two to three months for long-tail searches and six to twelve months for main service terms, with no guarantee.
Flamcom advises owners to get a written monthly task list, a pre-work baseline and the minimum term from any SEO company before signing.
SEO cost questions
How much should a small business pay for SEO?
Most small businesses should budget $1,500 to $3,000 a month for agency SEO, the range GoodFirms reported in 2026. Freelancers often charge less; Ahrefs' 2023 survey found they averaged about $1,349 a month. A business serving one area can sit near the low end, while several locations or a crowded market need more. Flamcom starts at $1,499 a month, and the free assessment sets your scope.
Is $500 a month enough for SEO?
It can cover a narrow job, such as keeping your Google Business Profile and listings in shape, but rarely a full program. At the $75 to $100 hourly rate Ahrefs' 2023 survey found most common, $500 buys about five to seven hours a month. That leaves little time for fixes, new pages and reporting together. GoodFirms suggests treating quotes under $500 a month with suspicion.
How much does local SEO cost?
Local SEO costs about $1,557 a month on average, according to Ahrefs' 2023 survey, for providers serving local markets, against $3,474 for those serving clients worldwide. Local work centers on your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, directory listings, reviews and pages for the areas you serve. Flamcom's retainer includes Google Business Profile and Bing Places as standard.
Why is SEO charged monthly?
Search results, AI answers and your competitors keep changing, so the work keeps going. A one-off project can fix a site and add pages, but our written typical timing for main service terms is six to twelve months of steady work. A retainer pays for that: new and refreshed pages, listings, fixes and a monthly report.
Can I cancel Flamcom's SEO retainer?
Yes. The retainer has a 3-month minimum, and after that it runs month to month. You cancel with 30 days' written notice. Before you sign, you get the scope, the monthly price and the term in writing. Each report then lists that month's work with dates, which gives you what you need to decide whether to stay. Full terms are on our pricing page.
Is it cheaper to build a new website or pay for SEO?
They pay for different things, and many small businesses need both. A website is a one-time build, and SEO is the ongoing work that gets it found. If your site is slow or hard for search engines to read, a rebuild can cost less than months of patching. Our guide to small business website costs covers build prices, and Flamcom's Scale package includes 90 days of SEO work.
